DANIEL Charles Tweedie, one-time mainstay of the local live music

Danny’s latest departure in
Verona is a truly three-D
affair, says Nick Churchill
DANIEL Charles
Tweedie, one-time
mainstay of the
local live music
scene, has resurfaced with
a new band – in Italy.
“In fair Verona, where we
lay our scene” as Shakespeare
would have it, Danny
– who, in pre-MySpace
days fronted various local
bands including Olympia
and the Nobbers From Hell
– has landed a deal with an
Italian record company
and now counts three-times
Eurovision Song Contest
winer Johnny Logan
among his labelmates.
His new trio, Danny, Dex
& The Duke have now lined
up an industry showcase in
a deconsecrated church in
Venice and are looking forward
to their first recording
session in Rome.
“It’s a long way from
what I was doing over
there,” says the never-shy
46-year-old.
“Back then I used to roll
around on the floor and
punch the boards pretending
I was God knows who.
“This is me dignifying my
age – it’s like Nick Cave
meets Cole Porter. It’s
lighter, sweeter with big
tunes and some amazing
playing.”
Veronese maestro Aronne
Gasparato (The Duke), who
was playing Rachmaninov
at the age of five and went
on to conduct at the famous
Verona Filarmonico theatre
and arrange for
Manhattan Transfer, completes
the line-up with saxophonist
Paolo Balini
(Dex).
“These guys are serious
musicians, the best I’ve
ever played with.
“No disrespect to any of
my old bands. I’ve always
been able to muscle my
way through a tune, but
I’ve never played with anyone
that really knows how
to arrange that tune and
keep it special.
“The music I’m making
now has an elegance and
grandness – a bit of jazz, a
bit of Lloyd Webber... really!”
Danny moved to Verona
in 2002 with his family and
has been teaching English
since he arrived.
A bad scooter accident
laid him low for well over a
year, but now he’s back
doing what he loves best –
making music and leading
from the front.
“Well, you didn’t think I’d
stop, did you? It’s way too
early to give up and life’s
too short to start playing
Rolling Stones covers.”
